Nutrition trends change as often as fashion trends; it can be hard to keep up! The current buzz in the fitness world is Macros. Many people are claiming that you can eat whatever you want if it fits within your macros. Although it is a little more complex than that, diet doesn’t have to be as complicated as some make it out to be. While proper nutrition is enormously important, it doesn’t need to require so much of us. Ellyn Satter said it best, “Nutrition should take up some of your time and attention, but keep its place as only one important area of your life.” Check out our PFPF Perfect Plate If you don’t know what Macros are, here’s a little explanation. Macronutrients or “macros” are the three main sources of energy: carbohydrate (4 calories per gram), protein (4 calories per ... View Post
Loving your body at every stage
I feel like it's important to step back and realize what stage of life you are in with your body. I hate the line "No Excuses". Well sometimes we have excuses. Sick kids, husband traveling, pregnant, new born (no sleep), working night shifts etc. Recently, I just finished taking Acutane (Isotretinoin). GASP! I know right, I felt like I was taking poison for my body. I hate sharing this personal stuff, I wasn't sure I wanted to share it on here because I know it's not that big of deal. I know there are bigger issues out there, BUT it has been a big deal to me! If you don't know about Acutane it is to cure acne. It is a pretty intense medicine (blood work, urine tests, monthly check ups etc) I have struggled with breakouts all my life, and I was tired of being self conscious. I was ... View Post
What kind of Eater is your Kid?
In a world where everyone is a "nutrition enthusiast", many children are missing out on a plethora of good food and nutrition. I have always avoided extremes, especially when it comes to my kids. I aim to make my home the most healthy environment that I can, but don't get too uptight when they are with friends and grandparents. My only goal is that my children learn to love and respect all food and what it does for their bodies. I want them to try all cuisines and flavors. I'm aiming to raise "foodies" over "health nuts". I don't "hide" food (although there was a time when my oldest was a toddler). We should be honest with them and let them learn to love vegetables prepared in various ways. When we eat dinner together I always pick a "dinner star" they don't get anything special, just a ... View Post

“Total Twaddle” Food Tips:
Nutrition doesn't always have to be as complicated as some make it. Always second guess those who promote things that don't make sense and come from those who don't have the credentials to back up their tips. We need to trust our bodies more, they are magnificent. Feed them food. I love this article from The Angry Chef, who also has a degree in Biochemistry. According to him, here are 10 Tips that are total Twaddle - what a great word! Detox: "a detox does not occur when you drink vegetable juices" Alkaline foods: "there is no science behind this" Coconut oil: "It does not fight disease and eating lots of it will not make you thin" Butter in coffee: It does not trigger weight loss Gluten free is healthy: if you've been following us for a while, I hope you know this is ... PFPF Spotlight: Confessions of a Fitness Model
When does a goal become an obsession? When does healthy eating turn to disordered eating? We idolize those who have the perfect body, but do they truly encompass health? What does it really take to get there? No one is talking about this, but our girl Madelyn is. Read her story... I used to be a fitness competitor. Before that, I was a yo-yo dieter. Whether my "thing" was vegan, vegetarian, paleo, low carb, high carb, fruitarian, Atkins, or the South Beach Diet, I was obsessed with finding a perfect plan that would lead to the perfect body. I would run hours a day on the treadmill (not an exaggeration) so that I could validate putting food into my body at dinner time. I would count every step, calorie, gram of food, and I would obsessively research contradicting information about ... View Post
