Here are some more thoughts on fueling.
When I workout in the AM I get home and my kids are starting to wake up. I need to fix breakfast and nurse a baby, but I need to eat too. This way I can hurry and get protein in my body and not starve or just eat the first thing I see.
Why do we need to refuel after exercise?
During exercise your body breaks down tissues and uses energy (primarily carbohydrates) stored in the blood, liver and muscle. Replenishing the energy lost in the muscle (stored as glycogen) is essential for muscle recovery. Eating properly post-exercise is crucial to ensuring that your subsequent workouts are productive and enjoyable. Yes, I said Enjoyable!! When people tell me they had no energy or could barely finish a workout. I ask “Did you eat enough?” Food is fuel!

We see a lot of “juice cleanses” and “tummy teas” but do they fit the kind of active lifestyle you are living? If you are running, doing any type of HIIT, Tabata, Insanity, Orange Theory Fitness, Circuit training etc. You have to be eating real food! The people you see that are doing these types of “cleanses” have to remove themselves from burning too many calories or working out too hard.
After a late workout its never too late to eat to refuel your body. Don’t go to bed starving even if it is after you have eaten dinner. Not to say you need to do an all out splurge on food but any HIIT workout for an hour or longer needs to have some carb+protein balanced snack to refuel. I’m loving fresh berries, greek yogurt and protein filled granola (watch for the sugar).
Don’t get caught up in what others are eating! Make sure you are eating for your active lifestyle.
